ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Optimized New Shengmai Powder (ONSMP) is a sophisticated traditional Chinese medicinal formula renowned for bolstering vital energy, optimizing blood circulation, and mitigating fluid retention. After years of clinical application, ONSMP has shown a significant impact in improving myocardial injury and cardiac function and has a positive effect on treating heart failure. However, many unknowns exist about the molecular biological mechanisms of how ONSMP exerts its therapeutic effects, which require further research and exploration. AIM OF THE STUDY: Exploring the potential molecular biological mechanisms by which ONSMP ameliorates cardiomyocyte apoptosis and ferroptosis in ischemic heart failure (IHF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, we constructed a rat model of IHF by inducing acute myocardial infarction through surgery and using echocardiography, organ coefficients, markers of heart failure, antioxidant markers, and histopathological examination to assess the effects of ONSMP on cardiomyocyte apoptosis and ferroptosis in IHF rats. Next, we used bioinformatics analysis techniques to analyze the active components, signaling pathways, and core targets of ONSMP and calculated the interactions between core targets and corresponding elements. Finally, we detected the positive expression of apoptosis and ferroptosis markers and core indicators of signaling pathways by immunohistochemistry; detected the mean fluorescence intensity of core indicators of signaling pathways by immunofluorescence; detected the protein expression of signaling pathways and downstream effector molecules by western blotting; and detected the mRNA levels of p53 and downstream effector molecules by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: ONSMP can activate the Ser83 site of ASK by promoting the phosphorylation of the PI3K/AKT axis, thereby inhibiting the MKK3/6-p38 axis and the MKK4/7-JNK axis signaling to reduce p53 expression, and can also directly target and inhibit the activity of p53, ultimately inhibiting p53-mediated mRNA and protein increases in PUMA, SAT1, PIG3, and TFR1, as well as mRNA and protein decreases in SLC7A11, thereby inhibiting cardiomyocyte apoptosis and ferroptosis, effectively improving cardiac function and ventricular remodeling in IHF rat models. CONCLUSION: ONSMP can inhibit cardiomyocyte apoptosis and ferroptosis through the PI3K/AKT/p53 signaling pathway, delaying the development of IHF.

AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to explore which elements are risk factors for the development of anxiety and depression symptoms. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: A total of 1028 ICU patients with CVD were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Logistic regression was used to assess risk factors and associations between anxiety and depression symptoms, and mediation analysis was used to explore the effect of risk factors on the association between anxiety and depression symptoms. Reporting of the study followed the STROBE checklist. RESULTS: The results showed that among ICU patients with CVD, 38.1% had anxiety symptoms, 28.7% had depression symptoms and 19.3% had both anxiety and depression symptoms, and there was a significant association between anxiety and depression symptoms. We also identified female gender, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and cardiac function class IV as independent risk factors for anxiety and depression symptoms. Importantly, these factors also mediated the association between anxiety and depression symptoms, emphasising their role in the psychological well-being of this patient group. CONCLUSION: ICU patients with CVD were prone to anxiety and depression symptoms. Female gender, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and cardiac function class IV were identified as independent risk factors that also served as mediators in the relationship between anxiety and depression symptoms. Especially, cardiac function class IV emerged as a critical factor in this association. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: It is imperative for critical care professionals to recognize the elevated risk of depression and anxiety among ICU patients with severe CVD, especially those with cardiac function class IV, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and females. Proactive and supportive measures are essential for this vulnerable group during their ICU stay to safeguard their mental health and prevent negative outcomes. ABSTRACT: For sperm cryopreservation, the conventional method, which requires glycerol, has been used for a long time. In addition, the permeable cryoprotectant-free vitrification method has been continuously studied. Although the differences of cryopreservation effects between the two methods have being studied, differences in microRNA (miRNA) profiles between them remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the differences in miRNA expression profiles among conventional freezing sperm, droplet vitrification freezing sperm and fresh human sperm. We also analyzed the differences between these methods in terms of differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRs) related to early embryonic development and paternal epigenetics. Our results showed no significant differences between the cryopreservation methods in terms of sperm motility ratio, plasma membrane integrity, DNA integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential, acrosome integrity, and ultrastructural damage. However, sperm miRNA-sequencing showed differences between the two methods in terms of the numbers of DEmiRs (28 and 19 with vitrification using a nonpermeable cryoprotectant and the conventional method, respectively) in postthaw and fresh sperm specimens. DEmiRs related to early embryonic development and paternal epigenetics mainly included common DEmiRs between the groups. Our results showed that the differences between conventional freezing and droplet vitrification were minimal in terms of miRNA expression related to embryonic development and epigenetics. Changes in sperm miRNA expression due to freezing are not always detrimental to embryonic development. This study compared differences in miRNA expression profiles before and after cryopreservation between cryopreservation by conventional and vitrification methods. It offers a new perspective to evaluate various methods of sperm cryopreservation.

This study explores low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy (LiESWT)'s efficacy in alleviating detrusor hyperactivity with impaired contractility (DHIC) induced by ovarian hormone deficiency (OHD) in ovariectomized rats. The rats were categorized into the following four groups: sham group; OVX group, subjected to bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) for 12 months to induce OHD; OVX + SW4 group, underwent OHD for 12 months followed by 4 weeks of weekly LiESWT; and OVX + SW8 group, underwent OHD for 12 months followed by 8 weeks of weekly LiESWT. Cystometrogram studies and voiding behavior tracing were used to identify the symptoms of DHIC. Muscle strip contractility was evaluated through electrical-field, carbachol, ATP, and KCl stimulations. Western blot and immunofluorescence analyses were performed to assess the expressions of various markers related to bladder dysfunction. The OVX rats exhibited significant bladder deterioration and overactivity, alleviated by LiESWT. LiESWT modified transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) channel expression, regulating calcium concentration and enhancing bladder capacity. It also elevated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress proteins, influencing ER-related Ca2+ channels and receptors to modulate detrusor muscle contractility. OHD after 12 months led to neuronal degeneration and reduced TRPV1 and TRPV4 channel activation. LiESWT demonstrated potential in enhancing angiogenic remodeling, neurogenesis, and receptor response, ameliorating DHIC via TRPV channels and cellular signaling in the OHD-induced DHIC rat model.

BACKGROUND: Thiopurine-induced leucopenia significantly hinders the wide application of thiopurines. Dose optimization guided by nudix hydrolase 15 (NUDT15) has significantly reduced the early leucopenia rate, but there are no definitive biomarkers for late risk leucopenia prediction. AIM: To determine the predictive value of early monitoring of DNA-thioguanine (DNATG) or 6-thioguanine nucleotides (6TGN) for late leucopenia under a NUDT15-guided thiopurine dosing strategy in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: Blood samples were collected within two months after thiopurine initiation for detection of metabolite concentrations. Late leucopenia was defined as a leukocyte count < 3.5 × 109/L over two months. RESULTS: Of 148 patients studied, late leucopenia was observed in 15.6% (17/109) of NUDT15/thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) normal and 64.1% (25/39) of intermediate metabolizers. In patients suffering late leucopenia, early DNATG levels were significantly higher than in those who did not develop late leucopenia (P = 4.9 × 10-13). The DNATG threshold of 319.43 fmol/µg DNA could predict late leucopenia in the entire sample with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.855 (sensitivity 83%, specificity 81%), and in NUDT15/TPMT normal metabolizers, the predictive performance of a threshold of 315.72 fmol/µg DNA was much more remarkable with an AUC of 0.902 (sensitivity 88%, specificity 85%). 6TGN had a relatively poor correlation with late leucopenia whether in the entire sample (P = 0.021) or NUDT15/TPMT normal or intermediate metabolizers (P = 0.018, P = 0.55, respectively). CONCLUSION: Proactive therapeutic drug monitoring of DNATG could be an effective strategy to prevent late leucopenia in both NUDT15/TPMT normal and intermediate metabolizers with CD, especially the former.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of continuity nursing based on the theory of Knowledge-Attitude-Practice (KAP) on the quality of life, self-efficacy, and treatment compliance in elderly patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). METHODS: In this single-center, randomized controlled study, a total of 232 elderly BPH patients who received treatment at our hospital from June 2020 to June 2022 were selected as the research subjects. They were randomly divided into the research group (n = 116) and the control group (n = 116). The control group received conventional interventions, while the research group received continuity nursing based on the theory of KAP on the basis of control group. Anxiety, depression, self-care agency, quality of life, self-efficacy, treatment compliance, and nursing satisfaction were compared between these 2 groups. RESULTS: Before nursing intervention, both groups showed a decrease in SAS and SDS scores after the intervention. Furthermore, self-care ability, self-care responsibility, self-concept, health knowledge level, role function, emotional function, somatic function, cognitive function, social function, and General Self-Efficacy Scale scores increased. Additionally, the research group demonstrated lower/higher levels than the control group (P < .05). The research group exhibited higher treatment compliance (P = .002) and greater nursing satisfaction compared to the control group (P = .014). CONCLUSION: Continuity nursing based on the theory of KAP can improve negative emotions in elderly BPH patients, enhance their self-efficacy and treatment compliance, and achieve better clinical outcomes.

Atmospheric exposure is an important pathway of accumulation of lead (Pb) in Oryza sativa L. grains. In this study, source contributions of soil, early atmospheric exposure, and late atmospheric exposure, along with their bioaccumulation ratios were examined both in the pot and field experiments using stable Pb isotope fingerprinting technology combined with a three-compartment accumulation model. Furthermore, genotype differences in airborne Pb accumulation among four field-grown rice cultivars were investigated using the partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) linking rice Pb accumulation to agronomic traits. The findings revealed that during the late growth period, the air-foliar-grain transfer of Pb was crucial for rice Pb accumulation. Approximately 69-82% of the Pb found in polished rice was contributed by atmospheric source, with more than 80% accumulating during the late growth stage. The air accumulation ratios of rice grains were genotype-specific and estimated to be 0.364-1.062 m3/g during the late growth. Notably, grain size exhibited the highest standardized total effects on the airborne Pb concentrations in the polished rice, followed by leaf Pb and the upward translocation efficiency of Pb. The present study indicates that mitigating the health risks associated with Pb in rice can be achieved by controlling atmospheric Pb levels during the late growth stage and choosing Japonica inbred varieties characterized by large grain size.

Pulpitis is a common and frequent disease in dental clinics. Although vital pulp therapy and root canal treatment can stop the progression of inflammation, they do not allow for genuine structural regeneration and functional reconstruction of the pulp-dentin complex. In recent years, with the development of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, research on stem cell-based regenerative endodontic therapy (RET) has achieved satisfactory preliminary results, significantly enhancing its clinical translational prospects. As one of the crucial paracrine effectors, the roles and functions of exosomes in pulp-dentin complex regeneration have gained considerable attention. Due to their advantages of cost-effectiveness, extensive sources, favorable biocompatibility, and high safety, exosomes are considered promising therapeutic tools to promote dental pulp regeneration. Accordingly, in this article, we first focus on the biological properties of exosomes, including their biogenesis, uptake, isolation, and characterization. Then, from the perspectives of cell proliferation, migration, odontogenesis, angiogenesis, and neurogenesis, we aim to reveal the roles and mechanisms of exosomes involved in regenerative endodontics. Lastly, immense efforts are made to illustrate the clinical strategies and influencing factors of exosomes applied in dental pulp regeneration, such as types of parental cells, culture conditions of parent cells, exosome concentrations, and scaffold materials, in an attempt to lay a solid foundation for exploring and facilitating the therapeutic strategy of exosome-based regenerative endodontic procedures.

Harnessing electrical or solar energy for the renewable production of value-added fuels and chemicals through catalytic processes (such as photocatalysis and electrocatalysis) is promising to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Owing to the large number of highly accessible active sites, highly porous structure, and charge separation/transfer ability, as well as excellent stability against chemical and electrochemical corrosion, zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)-based catalysts have attracted significant attention. Strategic construction of heterojunctions, and alteration of the metal node and the organic ligand of the ZIFs effectively regulate the binding energy of intermediates and the reaction energy barriers that allow tunable catalytic activity and selectivity of a product during reaction. Focusing on the currently existing critical issues of insufficient kinetics for electron transport and selective generation of ideal products, this review starts from the characteristics and physiochemical advantages of ZIFs in catalytic applications, then introduces promising regulatory approaches for advancing the kinetic process in emerging CO2 reduction, water splitting and N2 reduction applications, before proposing perspective modification directions.

BACKGROUND: Delayed or missed dosages caused by poor medication compliance significantly affected the treatment of diseases in children. AIMS: The present study aimed to investigate the influence of delayed or missed dosages on sirolimus pharmacokinetics (PK) in pediatric tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) patients and to recommend remedial dosages for nonadherent patients. METHODS: A published sirolimus population PK model in pediatric TSC patients was used to assess the influence of different nonadherence scenarios and recommend optimally remedial dosages based on Monte Carlo simulation. Thirteen nonadherent scenarios were simulated in this study, including delayed 2h, 4 h, 6 h, 8 h, 10 h, 12 h, 14 h, 16 h, 18 h, 20 h, 22 h, 23.5 h, and missed one dosage. Remedial dosing strategies contained 10-200% of scheduled dosages. The optimal remedial dosage was that with the maximum probability of returning the individual therapeutic range. RESULTS: For delayed or missed sirolimus dosages in pediatric TSC patients, when the delayed time was 0-8 h, 8-10 h, 10-18 h, 18-22.7 h, 22.7-24 h, 70%, 60%, 40%, 30%, 20% scheduled dosages were recommended to take immediately. When one dosage was missed, 120% of scheduled dosages were recommended at the next dose. CONCLUSION: It was the first time to recommend remedial dosages for delayed or missed sirolimus therapy caused by poor medication compliance in pediatric TSC patients based on Monte Carlo simulation. Meanwhile, the present study provided a potential solution for delayed or missed dosages in clinical practice.

Periodontitis is a bacteria-induced inflammatory disease characterized by the progressive destruction of periodontal supporting tissues. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) are capable of differentiating into osteoblasts, which is an important stem cell source for endogenous periodontal tissue regeneration. Lysine lactylation (Kla) is a novel post-translational modification of proteins that is recently thought to be associated with osteogenic differentiation. Here, we found that lactylation levels are reduced both in the periodontal tissue of rats with periodontitis and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human PDLSCs. Proanthocyanidins were able to promote the osteogenesis of inflamed PDLSCs by restoring lactylation levels. Mechanistically, proanthocyanidins increased lactate production and restored the lactylation levels of PDLSCs, which recovered osteogenesis of inflamed PDLSCs via the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. These results provide evidence on how epigenetic regulation by pharmacological agents influence the osteogenic phenotype of stem cells and the process of periodontal tissue repair. Our current study highlights the valuable potential of natural product proanthocyanidins in the regenerative engineering of periodontal tissues.

Traditional Chinese exercises (TCEs) have great value in the prevention and effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Our purpose in this study was to summarize present research trends and future directions regarding the link between TCEs and CVD by bibliometrics analysis. We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) for all original articles and reviews on TCEs for CVD published in English before August 7, 2022 using CiteSpace 5.8.R3 and Microsoft Excel 2019 software, and we displayed the results in the form of network maps, line graphs, and tables. We initially obtained 725 articles. Our results showed that the United States was the most influential country in this line of research, with Harvard University the most prolific institution in the field, and, Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the most productive journal for these articles. The highest-frequency keywords in this research area were Tai Chi, exercise, blood pressure, quality of life, and older adult. Additionally, important research topics included heart rate variability, quality of life, meta-analysis, Baduanjin exercise, and breathing exercise. In addition, our results revealed that among all the TCEs, Tai Chi, Baduanjin, and Qigong emerged as the most extensively studied. However, it's important to note our exclusive focus on literature published in English may have led to our missing important results. Future investigators should broaden their search to include other databases and languages to present a still more comprehensive overview of this field.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have reported the beneficial effects of unfermented soy product consumption on blood lipids in various populations. However, contradictory results have been reported regarding the influence of unfermented soy product consumption on blood lipids in postmenopausal women. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of diets with unfermented soy products compared with diets without unfermented soy products on blood lipids in postmenopausal women. METHODS: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase electronic databases were searched for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to February 21, 2023. RCTs were included if they were published in English and investigated the effect of unfermented soy product consumption on blood lipids in postmenopausal women who had discontinued hormone replacement therapy at least 3 months before randomization. A random-effects model was used to calculate the overall effect size of the mean difference (MD) and 95% CI. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Tool for Randomized Trials, version 2. RESULTS: Twenty-nine RCTs involving 2,457 participants were included. The results showed that, compared with the control group that did not consume unfermented soy products, consumption of unfermented soy products significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC) (MD, -9.46 mg/dL [to convert mg/dL cholesterol to mmol/L, multiply mg/dL by 0.0259; to convert mmol/L cholesterol to mg/dL, multiply by 38.7]; 95% CI -15.04 to -3.89 mg/dL; P = .001) and triglycerides (TGs) (MD, -10.86 mg/dL [to convert mg/dL TGs to mmol/L, multiply mg/dL by 0.0113; to convert mmol/L TGs to mg/dL, multiply mmol/L by 88.6]; 95% CI -19.70 to -2.02 mg/dL; P = .016), while significantly increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD, 2.32 mg/dL; 95% CI 0.87 to 3.76 mg/dL; P = .002) in postmenopausal women, but had no significant effect on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD, -4.55 mg/dL; 95% CI -10.90 to 1.80 mg/dL; P = .160). Results of soy preparation subgroup analysis showed that soy isolate protein significantly reduced TC and soy protein-containing isoflavones significantly reduced TC and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Furthermore, unfermented soy product consumption significantly reduced TC, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and TG levels in postmenopausal women with lipid disorders and TGs in healthy postmenopausal women. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that unfermented soy product consumption reduced TC and TG levels significantly, and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in postmenopausal women. The findings of this review contribute to the evidence-base for dietary management of blood lipids in postmenopausal women.

INTRODUCTION: Exosomes derived from M2 macrophages (M2-Exos) exhibit tremendous potential for inducing tissue repair and regeneration. Herein, this study was designed to elucidate the biological roles of M2-Exos in regenerative endodontic therapy (RET) compared with exosomes from M1 macrophages (M1-Exos). METHODS: The internalization of M1-Exos and M2-Exos by dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was detected by uptake assay. The effects of M1-Exos and M2-Exos on DPSC and HUVEC behaviors, including migration, proliferation, odonto/osteogenesis, neurogenesis, and angiogenesis were determined in vitro. Then, Matrigel plugs incorporating M2-Exos were transplanted subcutaneously into nude mice. Immunostaining for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and CD31 was performed to validate capillary-like networks. RESULTS: M1-Exos and M2-Exos were effectively absorbed by DPSCs and HUVECs. Compared with M1-Exos, M2-Exos considerably facilitated the proliferation and migration of DPSCs and HUVECs. Furthermore, M2-Exos robustly promoted ALP activity, mineral nodule deposition, and the odonto/osteogenic marker expression of DPSCs, indicating the powerful odonto/osteogenic potential of M2-Exos. In sharp contrast with M1-Exos, which inhibited the neurogenic capacity of DPSCs, M2-Exos contributed to a significantly augmented expression of neurogenic genes and the stronger immunostaining of Nestin. Consistent with remarkably enhanced angiogenic markers and tubular structure formation in DPSCs and HUVECs in vitro, the employment of M2-Exos gave rise to more abundant vascular networks, dramatically higher VEGF expression, and widely spread CD31+ tubular lumens in vivo, supporting the enormous pro-angiogenic capability of M2-Exos. CONCLUSIONS: The multifaceted roles of M2-Exos in ameliorating DPSC and HUVEC functions potentially contribute to complete functional pulp-dentin complex regeneration.

OBJECTIVE: Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) play a critical role on the exacerbation and deterioration of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Aberrant activation of FLS pyroptosis signaling is responsible for the hyperplasia of synovium and destruction of cartilage of RA. This study investigated the screened traditional Chinese medicine berberine (BBR), an active alkaloid extracted from the Coptis chinensis plant, that regulates the pyroptosis of FLS and secretion of inflammatory factors in rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: First, BBR was screened using a high-throughput drug screening strategy, and its inhibitory effect on RA-FLS was verified by in vivo and in vitro experiments. Second, BBR was intraperitoneally administrated into the collagen-induced arthritis rat model, and the clinical scores, arthritis index, and joint HE staining were evaluated. Third, synovial tissues of CIA mice were collected, and the expression of NLRP3, cleaved-caspase-1, GSDMD-N, Mst1, and YAP was detected by Western blot. RESULTS: The administration of BBR dramatically alleviated the severity of collagen-induced arthritis rat model with a decreased clinical score and inflammation reduction. In addition, BBR intervention significantly attenuates several pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, interleukin-17, and interleukin-18). Moreover, BBR can reduce the pyroptosis response (caspase-1, NLR family pyrin domain containing 3, and gasdermin D) of the RA-FLS in vitro, activating the Hippo signaling pathway (Mammalian sterile 20-like kinase 1, yes-associated protein, and transcriptional enhanced associate domains) so as to inhibit the pro-inflammatory effect of RA-FLS. CONCLUSION: These results support the role of BBR in RA and may have therapeutic implications by directly repressing the activation, migration of RA-FLS, which contributing to the attenuation of the progress of CIA. Therefore, targeting PU.1 might be a potential therapeutic approach for RA. Besides, BBR inhibited RA-FLS pyroptosis by downregulating of NLRP3 inflammasomes (NLRP3, caspase-1) and eased the pro-inflammatory activities via activating the Hippo signaling pathway, thereby improving the symptom of CIA.

BACKGROUND: Mammalian STE20-like kinase 1 (MST1) is involved in the occurrence of cancer and autoimmune diseases by regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and other functions. However, its role and downstream targets in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remain unclear. METHODS: The model of RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RA-FLSs) overexpressing MST1 was constructed by lentiviral transfection in vitro and analyzed the effects of MST1 on apoptosis, migration, invasion, and inflammation of RA-FLSs. The effect of MST1 on joint synovial membrane inflammation and bone destruction was observed in vivo by establishing a rat model of arthritis with complete Freund's adjuvant. RESULTS: MST1 is down-regulated in RA-FLSs, and up-regulation of MST1 inhibits the survival, migration, invasion and inflammation of RA-FLSs. Mechanistically, MST1 inhibits SIRT3/mTOR-signaling pathway, inducing decreased mitochondrial autophagy and increased mitochondrial fission, resulting in mitochondrial morphological abnormalities and dysfunction, and ultimately increased apoptosis. We have observed that activation of MST1 alleviates synovial inflammation and bone erosion in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: MST1 reduces the survival, migration, invasion and inflammation of FLSs by inhibiting the SIRT3/mTOR axis to reduce mitochondrial autophagy and promote mitochondrial division, thereby achieving the potential role of relieving rheumatoid arthritis.

Several epidemiological studies suggested that frequency of tooth brushing may be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, but the results remain inconclusive. Therefore, the aim of this study was to synthesize frequency of tooth brushing and CVD risk using meta-analysis. Science Direct, PubMed, CINAHL, and OVID were searched through October 15, 2022. The random-effects model was used to quantitatively assess the combined risk estimation. In addition, we performed the sensitivity analysis to evaluate the robustness of the study results by excluding the included studies one by one. A total of 9 cohort studies containing 10 reports with 803,019 individuals were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled results showed that compared with the lowest brushing frequency, the highest brushing frequency (relative risk = 0.85, 95% confidence interval: 0.80-0.90) significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease. There was moderate heterogeneity among included studies (P = .002, I2 = 65.4%). The exclusion of any one study did not materially change the combined risk estimates. Our meta-analysis supported the hypothesis that higher frequency of tooth brushing can reduce the risk of CVD, which may have important implications for conducting research on the prevention strategies of CVD.

Periodontitis can lead to defects in the alveolar bone, thus increasing the demand for dependable biomaterials to repair these defects. This study aims to examine the pro-osteogenic and anti-bacterial properties of UPPE/ß-TCP/TTC composites (composed of unsaturated polyphosphoester [UPPE], ß-tricalcium phosphate [ß-TCP], and tetracycline [TTC]) under an inflammatory condition. The morphology of MC3T3-E1 cells on the composite was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The toxicity of the composite to MC3T3-E1 cells was assessed using the Alamar-blue assay. The pro-osteogenic potential of the composite was assessed through ALP staining, ARS staining, RT-PCR, and WB. The antimicrobial properties of the composite were assessed using the zone inhibition assay. The results suggest that: (1) MC3T3-E1 cells exhibited stable adhesion to the surfaces of all four composite groups; (2) the UPPE/ß-TCP/TTC composite demonstrated significantly lower toxicity to MC3T3-E1 cells; and (3) the UPPE/ß-TCP/TTC composite had the most pronounced pro-osteogenic effect on MC3T3-E1 cells by activating the WNT/ß-catenin pathway and displaying superior antibacterial properties. UPPE/ß-TCP/TTC, as a biocomposite, has been shown to possess antibacterial properties and exhibit excellent potential in facilitating osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells.

The present study has successfully established a scientific and precise approach for distinguishing the geographical origins of young citrus fruits (Qingpi) from four primary production regions in China, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and flash gas chromatography electronic nose (flash GC e-nose) to analyze the volatile composition and odor characteristics. Through the application of chemometric analysis, a clear differentiation among Qingpi samples was established using GC-MS. Additionally, the application of flash GC e-nose facilitated the extraction of flavor information, which enabled the discrimination of geographical origins. Several flavor components were identified as significant factors for origin certification. Furthermore, two pattern recognition algorithms were employed to achieve high accuracy in regional identification. The results of this investigation demonstrate that the amalgamation of multivariate chemometrics and algorithms can proficiently discern the sources of those young citrus fruits. The findings of this research can provide a reference for the assessment of quality control in food and other agricultural commodities in the times ahead.
